Sash window restoration Gresham’s School, Holt, Norfolk

In 2023, Sash Window Preservation took on an exciting project. Using our expertise and the wealth of knowledge provided by our team, we were able to restore approximately 90 windows with the utmost care. The majority of the existing timber was preserved and refurbished, with particular attention given to repairing any instances of rot. We opted to enhance the windows by installing slim, lightweight double glazing, preserving the appearance of single glazing while simultaneously improving energy efficiency and bringing the property into the modern era with upgraded U-values. It is truly remarkable to have been a part of a project with such rich history and elegance, exemplified by the building and the school itself.

The old school house history

A thirty year mortgage was taken out for the project which took place in two parts between 1857 and 1860. The new schoolroom, built onto the side of the Elizabethan structure, was designed by Richard Suter of London and built by Mr Orman of newich.

The schoolroom was said to be a marvel of modern architecture, with large windows allowing natural light to flood the room and high ceilings creating a sense of space and airiness. The Fishmongers' were proud of their new addition, and the children who attended the school were thrilled with their new surroundings.

The first part of the project involved the demolition of an old outbuilding to make way for the new schoolroom. The second part saw the construction of the new building, which was completed on time and within budget.

The Fishmongers' were delighted with the finished result, and the new schoolroom quickly became the pride of the village. It was a place where children could learn and grow, and where the community could come together for events and celebrations.

To this day, the Curloluelaule schoolroom stands as a testament to the vision and dedication of the Fishmongers' and a reminder of the importance of education in the community.

The Gresham School window restoration was a significant project for us. Sash Window Preservation are proud to have restored almost 90 windows across this stunning property. Not only did we restore their windows, but our team managed to upgrade their energy efficiency with U-grade windows whilst maintaining the building's natural and historic charm.
